Is it possible to attach a secondary storage device to a non-TiVo DirectTV DVR?
I have an HD DVR from DirectTV. Originally, I wanted to burn my favorite shows on to DVD. However, the lack of active USB ports prevents this. Is it possible to attach a secondary storage device to the DVR unit? If I can’t burn the shows maybe I can attach a 1TB drive to the unit to store as many shows as I want.
This may depend on which DirecTV HD DVR unit you have. If I remember correctly one of the HD units has the ability to connect to a PC that has Intel’s ViiV computer. I also know that other than that there is no way of attaching anything to your DVR (If you do not have the model I am remembering) so that you can store more shows or copy more shows to your PC for burning to DVD.
You can purchase a TV Tuner Capture Card for your PC so you can connect one of the DVRs outputs to the back of your PCs Tuner Card. Press play on the DVR and Record on the software for the Tuner Card. The ONLY issue with this is that it will transfer in real time, so if it is a 2 hour movie it will take 2 hours to transfer. I have used both of these units in the past with my DirecTV Tivo’s before I modified them to allow me to network the DirecTV Tivos to my homes wired/Wireless Network..
